Rescue teams search for missing people in quake-hit Marrakech, death toll nears 2,500

MARRAKECH, MOROCCO - SEPTEMBER 11: Search and rescue operations are underway in the town of Talat N'Yaaqoub in Marrakesh following the deadly earthquake that hit the country on Friday. The death toll from a deadly earthquake in Morocco has risen to 2,497 people, according to the country’s Interior Ministry on Monday. In a statement, the ministry said 2,476 other people were injured in the magnitude-7 earthquake that jolted the North African country late Friday. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicenter of the quake, which hit just after 11 p.m. local time, was 75 kilometers (46.6 miles) southeast of Marrakech, at a depth of 18.5 kilometers. Massive damage was reported in Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site, from the deadly quake.
