The plentiful plankton brought by the ice supports rich ecosystems on both sea and land. Shiretoko is a designated World Heritage site for the rare quality of its natural environment. The marine and wildlife include salmon and trout, the Blakiston's fish-owl (Bubo blakistoni), the great egret, brown bears and Ezo deer. The peninsula has primeval and other forest ecosystems.
