The military macaw (Ara militaris) is one of the smallest of macaw species and is gentle and even-tempered. Known for blushing when excited, its preferred habitat is arid woodlands of the subtropical zone. It nests in hollow trees as well as caves in canyons and cliffs. Its diet consists of fruits and grains. Endangered, it is native to Central and South America and Mexico.
