Lithocap - stock photo

A distinctive buff-colored rocky outcrop occurs the length of this roadcut near Beutong village in Aceh province along the Takengon to Meulaboh road, Indonesia. The rock exposure is extremely altered and forms what is known by geologists as a lithocap, a type of altered rock that can occur above a buried porphyry that can be rich in copper and gold. The lithocap certainly catches the attention of any astute geologist. The geologist then has to convince investors that this barren rock is worth drilling into to see if it overlies any buried riches of copper.
