Abandze / Kormantin, Mfantseman District, Central Region, Ghana, West Africa: the hill-top Dutch Fort Amsterdam - west side and local houses - an early Dutch outpost was established in 1598, the fort was built in 1638 by the English, it was captured by admiral Michiel de Ruyter for the Dutch West India Company in 1665, becoming part of the Dutch Gold Coast. Named Fort York under the English, also known as Fort Kormantin / Fort Cormantine / Fort Courmantyne. It was the first English slave outpost in Africa, trading also in gold and ivory with local suppliers. The "Cormantine" slaves, as they were called, were bought from the Ashanti and then transported to the Americas. Triangular trade / Atlantic slave trade. UNESCO World Heritage site.
