A woman photographs a display of clay fi

A woman photographs a display of clay figurine rabbit gods for sale at a Taoist temple in Beijing on September 14, 2008 in celebration of the mid-autumn festival. According to Chinese legend, the goddess of the moon Chang'e lived with the rabbit god, always armed with a medicine pestle in search of the elixir of immortality. The practice of worshipping the rabbit god, usually seated on the back of an animal, became popular in Beijing during the later part of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and it is only in recent years, with a resurgence of ancient and traditional folk arts and crafts of northern China, that the clay figurines have become more popular and available to the general public, particularly during the Spring Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the eight lunar month.
