UKRAINE-CHERNOBYL-ANNIVERSARY-PROTEST

Ukraine's green parties activists protest in front of the National Opera building in Kiev 24 April, 2006. The activists of the environmental groups picketed the building where an international conference on the Chernobyl disaster was to take place. Demonstrators are shocked with resumes of UN and IAEA commissions on the results of the catastrophe and protested against building of new 22 nuclear power blocs which Ukraine's government is planning to build in the country. On April 26, Ukraine marks the 20th anniversary of an accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which affected millions of people, gobbled up astronomic amount of international funds and remains a grim symbol of the hazards of atomic energy.
