Slovenes In Trieste
Two men of the all-Slovene village of Smarje in Zone B of the post-war Free Territory of Trieste, 24th May 1952. The sign on the building behind them reads 'Here we are all Slovenes'. To the right is another sign in support of Yugoslav leader Josip Tito. The state was formed as a result of a territorial dispute between Italy and Yugoslavia with Zone B ceded to Yugoslavia in 1954. Smarje is now part of Slovenia. Original publication: Picture Post - 5871 - Trieste: What It's All About - pub. 1952 (Photo by Bert Hardy/Picture Post/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
