Local Petitions To Save Trash From Brooklyn Bay Where Radiation Was Discovered

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 14: Trash and other items litter the sand at Dead Horse Bay, a strip of sand that has been a destination for those searching for old sea glass, washed -up antiques and ceramics in Brooklyn on October 14, 2021 in New York City. Part of a state park which sits atop a former landfill dating back to the 19th century, Dead Horse Bay was briefly closed after authorities found radioactive waste from leaking deck markers that were originally installed on ships’ decks to help prevent sailors from falling overboard at night. Park officials have since re-opened the section of beach after finding safe levels of radiation. Dead Horse Bay, which sits between two inlets near Jamaica Bay in South Brooklyn, got its name as it was once the site of glue factories that used dead horses. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)
