Then there was his close friend Elmer "Geronimo" Pratt – the Panthers' former field marshal, who spent 27 years behind bars on a murder conviction before a California judge overturned it. In 2002, Pratt bought a big farmhouse nearby with his false–imprisonment settlement, and O'Neal felt as though he'd rediscovered a lost brother. They drove through the village listening to Richard Pryor CDs, laughing until they wheezed and tears rolled down their cheeks. The wall surrounding Pete's compound has a memorial to Geronimo.
