The direction of the university has called for a 10% hike in student fees (roughly 40 to 60 US dollars per year and per student). Student argue that they cannot afford the hike because of the dare economic situation of the families in the region striken by insecurity and unemployment. Tension erupted late October in the area where the Congolese military eventually pulled back local self defence militia (Mai Mai) that had just settled there.
