JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA: Saudi security forces take position in front of the US consulate in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah 07 December 2004. Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda claimed yesterday's attack on the consulate, dealing a blow to the Saudi government's attempts to wipe out Islamic militants behind a wave of terror strikes. The broad-daylight assault on the fortified compound in Jeddah claimed as many as 13 lives, including consulate staff, gunmen and Saudi guardsmen, although there are conflicting reports and a final official toll is not available.
