Rudolf Hoess, Commandant of Auschwitz
Rudolf Hoess, the commandant of Auschwitz, boasted at the Nuremburg trials that he ran "the greatest extermination center of all time". After visiting the Treblinka concentration camp and judging its use of carbon monoxide gas too inefficient, he pioneered the use of Zyklon-B for mass extermination. After testifying at Nuremburg, he was tried for war crimes by the Polish government, found guilty, and hanged in Auschwitz. Ca. 1946. | Location: indoors. (Photo by © CORBIS/Corbis via Getty Images)
