US President George W. Bush (R) welcomes visiting former Czech President Vaclav Havel, in the Oval Office of the White House 23 July, 2003, Washington, DC. Havel is one of 11 personalities who are scheduled to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, in ceremonies later 23 july at the White House. Havel, 66, an acclaimed playwright, was a dissident member of the Charter 77 pro-democracy movement which resisted a Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia and was later largely responsible for the country's "velvet revolution" in 1989.
