Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850), 2nd Baronet, was the eldest son of Sir Robert Peel (1750-1830) of the calico-printing industry in Lancashire. Peel entered parliament in 1809 as Tory member for Cashel in Tipperary, Ireland. In the course of his career he was appointed under- secretary for the colonies (1811), Secretary for Ireland (1812-1818), Home Secretary (1822), and Prime Minister (1834-5, 1841-6). During his time as Home Secretary he reorganised the London Police Force, giving his name to the 'Peelers' and 'Bobbies' of the day. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
