A picture taken on July 17, 2012 of the Tomb of Askia in Gao which is believed to be the burial place of Askia Mohammad I, one of the Songhai Empire's most prolific emperors. It was built at the end of the fifteenth century and is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Gao which is under the control of hardline islamist group MUJAO have eased their stanse on Sharia unlike Ansar Dine members who have destroyed ancient Muslim tombs and other World Heritage sites in Timbuktu that they consider idolatrous.
