People look at shoes belonging to demonstrators left after French police, under orders from the head of the Parisian police, Maurice Papon, attacked an illegal but peaceful demonstration of between 20,000 and 30,000 pro-Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) Algerians on October 17, 1961 in Paris. After 37 years of denial, the French government acknowledged 40 deaths in 1998, although there are estimates of over 200. More than ten thousand Algerians were subsequently arrested and detained in various pre-planned locations (the Palais des Sports, the Parc des Expositions, the Stade Coubertin, the Centre d'Identification at Vincennes) for nearly four days.
