HONDURAS-INDIANS 3
One-year-old Roger Martinez(C) of the Tolupanes Indian tribe is held by his mother(L) while nurse Lidia Martinez(R) of the Honduran Health Ministry injects him with a vaccine for measles 28 April in the one-room health center in Montana de la Flor, 180 Km north of Tegucigalpa. The 650 members of this isolated Tolupanes community, one of Honduras' eight ethnic groups, who live in poor sanitary conditions, are affected by malnutrition as well as various ailments such as tuberculosis, anaemia, respiratory problems and the deadly Chaga disease which is transmitted by an insect. Honduran health authorities are launching an investigation in an attempt to find a way to eradicate the Chaga disease.
