Northern Alliance soldiers, under the control of Afghan worlord Ismail Khan who took over Herat in western Afghanistan after its capture from the Taliban 12 November, guard the entrance of Herat's Masjid-e Jami mosque 21 November 2001, as some 200 people demonstrated in support of the exiled King Zahir Shah. Khan addressed a meeting of elders and senior clerics assembled at the mosque to decide the fate of the strategic city of 140,000 inhabitants that lies at 150 kms from the Iranian border.
