Neighbors Along Chesapeake Bay Disagree Over Proposed Deer Culling

ANNAPOLIS, MD - NOVEMBER 29: (CAPTION WRITER: PLS NOTE THAT PRINTED CAPTION ON PUBLICATION MUST INCLUDE INFORMATION IN PARENTHESES BELOW, PHOTOGRAPHER AGREED TO THIS) Karen Delong at a dock in the Highland Beach Community which is a shallow walk for deer moving tto and from the Bay Ridge Community in Annapolis, MD on November 28, 2011. Delong is among about 40 people in Bay Ridge residents fighting to save native deer from being killed by hired hunters to cull the deer population. (Among several things, Delong and others say the deer count is inacturate and did not include the adjacent community of Highland Beach which is on the same peninsula). Neighbors within this Bay Ridge are at odds over a proposed deer kill that could begin as early as December. The Bay Ridge civic association board of directors asked the USDA to assess whether there was an over population of deer in the community which includes more than 90 acres of undeveloped land that was purchased by the community and placed in a land trust. Neighbors and association members are at odds with each other over the accuracy of two deer counts, the wording in the land trust and easement that the board members says allows hunting in that area as well as how the board handled this situation which has been under study for over six years.
