NEGATIVE# josephm 203600--SLUG--ME/SUDAN--DATE-09/08/08-- George Washington University, Washington, D.C.-PHOTOGRAPHER-MARVIN JOSEPH/TWP-- Joseph Makwei Mabioor Deng just arrived at George Washington University from a refugee camp in Kenya, where he has lived since fleeing violence in southern Sudan. Jeff DeFlavio is one of the student organizers of BANAA, a group founded at GW to try to promote peace in Sudan through education. Jeff has been helping Makwei find his way around, deal with profound culture shock and adapt to life in the U.S. -- everything from how to open doors to how to use the student id card to buy food.
