Iraqi Alittifad Abed Zaid lies unconscious in hospital in the city of Hilla, 100km south of Baghdad, 14 August 2004 after being injured the previous day when US troops fired on a bus she was travelling in at a roadblock, killing one person and wounding 4 others, according to the hospital's head doctor Mohannad Fadel al-Khafaji. Fourteen Iraqis were killed and 37 wounded in fierce gun battles between radical Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada Sadr's Mehdi Army and Polish-backed Iraqi police forces, the health ministry said. Fighters attacked police stations and government buildings, and police chief General Qais Hamza Aboud said 49 militiamen and three policemen were killed. Twenty Poles who were trapped inside a police station in the city during the overnight fighting returned to their base, the Polish military said.
