AIZAWL, INDIA: (FILES) In this picture taken 22 January 2004, Indian Jews place their hands to their faces as they take part in prayers at a synagogue in Aizawl. Tribal Mizos were this week putting the finishing touches to the construction of a "mikvah" in the state capital of Mizoram,under supervision of Israeli rabbis as part of a rigorous conversion drill, correspondents said. A team of rabbis, including architect Rabbi Doron Malka, was overseeing construction of the Jewish ritual bath . The 6,000-strong "Bnei Menashe" or children of Manasseh tribe spread across Mizoram and Manipur states were officially recognised March 2005, by sephardic or oriental chief rabbi Shlomo Amar in Jerusalem. Some 800 people from Mizoram and Manipur have managed to migrate to Israel since 1994 when a private body, called the Amishav Association took up their case, despite fears among the Israeli authorities that the Indians were simply seeking a better life.
