A Hutu militiaman controls fleeing Rwandans on May 27, 1994 at a checkpoint, 28kms south of Kigali, as thousands of people are leaving Kigali fearing that the rebels of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) who are marching on the capital close the roads. On April 6, 1994, the death of the Presidents of Burundi and Rwanda in a plane crash caused by a rocket attack, triggered several weeks of systematic and large-scale massacres targeting the Tutsi population and moderate Hutus in Rwanda.
