Gustavo Sanchez gets dressed to perform "Los Historiantes" in San Miguel de Mercedes, Chalatenango, 76 Kms north of San Salvador on December 2, 2007. Many of the dancers are youg people recruited by carver Celio Lopez, the last masks maker, who keeps the tradition alive by teaching both the dances and the carving of the masks. "Los Historiantes" is a group of dances brougth into the country by the Spaniards 500 years ago, and each of them -which lasts about two hours and a half- dramatizes an episode of the battles between the Christians and the Moorish.
