A group of 55 farmer-protesters belongin

A group of 55 farmer-protesters belonging to the marginalized Higaonon tribe joined by religious supporters attempt to march to the Malacanang presidential palace in Manila, 07 December 2007, before they were turned away by riot police. The farmers from Sumilao town in the southern island of Mindanao, had been marching for nearly two months in their "walk for land, walk for justice" campaign. The marchers who are the land reform beneficiary have received the backing of influential Roman Catholic church leaders but the San Miguel Corporation subsidiary who recently acquired the 144-hectare (355 acres) say they are backed up by a Supreme Court decision upholding their action. The Higaonon farmers walked the grueling distance of 1,700 kilometers from Sumilao in their final bid to deliver their demand before President Gloria Arroyo to grant ownership on the disputed property they claim their ancestral land.
