Inmates on Sing Sing's Grounds

(Original Caption) Going "Home." Ossining, New York: This view, inside Sing Sing's grounds, showing convicts returning to their cell blocks from work in the various shops, probably comes as a surprise to the average citizen. Though the buildings are grim and severe, the rolling lawns, dotted by trees, look like part of a college campus. Note, too, that the convicts no longer wear striped garb, nor are they required to march in the hated and demoralizing lock-step. Convicts work six hours a day and manufacture their own clothes, among other things. October 18, 1940.
