Girls in red, white and blue dresses wait to meet the Queen. The children of Parnell Road, Bow, East London had a grandstand view of the Queen as she passed on her tour of North and East London. The stand was made by the menfolk in the road and Mrs E. Brooks made 50 red, white and blue dresses for the girls. Two year old Jeanette Still was told to wave her flag. Instead she decided to give a one-girl Command Performance and she danced happily along the pavement as the Royal Car passed. The Daily Herald Archive contains all of the photographic prints and negatives created by the newspaper's in house picture library to illustrate and accompany articles in the newspaper. The photographic prints in the collection are often annotated on the reverse with text from the accompanying article and/or the name of the photographer or picture agency the image was sourced from. The collection also contains a number of contact sheets and prints. There is also a small amount of paper-based materials, including some example copies of the Daily Herald and day books logging the jobs undertaken by the paper's in house photographers. The archive offers a photographic record of local, national and international events spanning fifty years. It is particularly rich in 1920s and 1930s photojournalism covering such major events as the Spanish Civil War, the rise of fascism, the Abdication crisis, the General Strike and hunger and unemployment marches; and important personalities such as Hitler and Churchill. The archive also strongly represents the monarchy, politics, sport (especially horse racing), the arts and entertainment, science and industry.
