German writer Thomas Mann, 74, (1875-1955) signs the "Golden Guest Book" 26 July 1949 in Frankfurt/Main after returning to his native country after more than fifteen years. Mann, the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929, wrote his early masterpiece "Buddenbrooks" in 1901, tracing the decline of a family over four generations.
