Paris is the capital and most populous city of France, capital of the Île-de-France region. With a population of 2,229,095 inhabitants it is the fifth most populous municipality in the European Union. However, the urban extension of the French capital is much larger than its municipal territory: its metropolitan area, also called "Greater Paris". The city is located in northern France, on a bend of the Seine, a very favorable position as it is a fundamental transport and traffic hub on the European continent. Indeed, Paris' position at the center of the main land and river trade routes allowed it to become one of the most influential cities in France starting from the 10th century, with the construction of royal palaces, rich abbeys and the famous Notre-Dame cathedral.
