LISBON, PORTUGAL - DECEMBER 27: General João Cartaxo Alves, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, at outgoing Chief Of Staff of the Portuguese Navy Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo, and would-be candidate to Portugal's Presidency, ceremony in which Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa awarded the admiral the Grand Cross of the Order of Christ in Belem Presidential Palace on December 27, 2024, in Lisbon, Portugal. The Military Order of Christ was instituted by King Dinis in 1318 and confirmed by the Bull Ad ea ex quibus given by Pope John XXII in Avignon in March 1319. The Bull was issued at the request of King Dinis so that the Order created would succeed the Order of the Temple, extinguished in 1311 by Pope Clement V.
