In 1972 miners across Britain took part in the first national miners strike. At the beginning of the strike Saltley Coke Works in Birmingham remained open. Up to 2000 striking miners were brought in to picket the plants gates and forced production to a standstill. It was the first time 'flying pickets' were used away from the coal fields.
