NIGERIA-UNREST

Ethnic Tiv men and women eat 20 November 2001 at a make-shift roadside restaurant in the village of Zaki Biam, Benue state, in central Nigeria. The village was one of at least seven destroyed last month by soldiers in reprisal for the killing of 19 soldiers earlier in the month. The trouble in Benue originated in a decades-old conflict over land and political power between the ethnic Tiv and the neighbouring ethnic Jukun and Fulani. The Tiv are the largest ethnic group in the area and have in past years clashed with other ethnic groups. Moreover, Nigeria army soldiers on peacekeeping duty on the border between the two warring ethnic groups, are committing daily human rights violations, religious leaders, government officials and residents told AFP.
