John Radcliffe, British physician, c 1700.

UNITED KINGDOM - OCTOBER 21: Engraving by H Cook, after a painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723). A successful physician practising in Oxford and London, Radcliffe (1650-1714) became physician to Princess Anne (1665-1714) in 1686. He offended her by styling her distemper 'nothing but the vapours. In spite of annoying many important people by his extraordinary candour, he made a number of remarkable cures. The Radcliffe Infirmary and Observatory in Oxford and Bartholomew's Hospital in London were built and enlarged through funds bequeathed by him. Published by Fisher & Co, London, 1846.
