Covid-19: Educators With The Washington Teachers Union Deliver Mock Body Bags to DC Public Schools Headquarters To Depict What They Predict Will Happen if In-person Schools Reopen

WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 27: Educators with The Washington Teachers Union remove mock bodybags they delivered to DCPS HQ to depict what they predict will happen if D.C. schools reopen with any in-person learning in Washington, DC, on Monday, July 27, 2020. Teacher1, who didn't want to give a name, said, "We are here because we are concerned that the mayor is going to push the decision to go to a hybrid form of instruction, where teachers would be in classrooms and students would be in classrooms. Like it has in other countries around the world, Covid will spread. People will get it. People will die. And we want to know from the mayor what number is acceptable to her to assume that risk." Teacher2 said the bodybags represent "the lives you'll start to see as soon as we go back into schools brick-and-mortar. Those are the lives of the teachers." Teacher3 said, "Everyone in the community is at risk when schools open." Teacher2 said, "So many schools, without Covid, did not have soap and toilet paper. How do you promise us you're going to have the correct amount of PPE for us when you don't even have enough soap for the kids to wash their hands?"
