ELECTION-BIRMINGHAM
Don Scott sits with his 90-year-old mother, Mattie Mae Woods, who celebrated her 90th birthday on Tuesday by voting for Barack Obama, November 4, 2008. Woods and her daughter, Caffery, were the unintended victims of a January gun ambush that killed her daughter. Of the six bullet wounds sustained by the elder Woods, none hit a vital organ and all exited her body. She thanked God for sparing her life and allowing her to live long enough to cast a vote for a black presidential candidate. (Photo by Rick Zerby/MCT/Tribune News Service via Getty Images)
