Cycling, 1899.
UNITED KINGDOM - SEPTEMBER 20: Cycling, 1899. Plate taken from Illustrated London News (Vol 99/2, p CN11) showing men and women cycling in front of couples in motor cars. The lyrics of a song about the motor car are below. After painting by Lucien Davies. Since the boneshaker, the invention of the French company Michaux of Paris, had been introduced in the 1860s, the popularity of the bicycle had grown, as had experimentation with its form, at events such as the cyclists camp at Alexandra Palace. The majority of the bicycles shown here are safety bicycles, which appeared in 1884, but there are some variation, including the four-man cycle in the background. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
