Indian Officials Carry Ashes of Gandhi
(Original Caption) 2/19/1948-Allahabad, India- High Indian officials carry the ashes of Mohandas K. Gandhi from the train at Allahabad to the flower-decked truck which carried the urn to the sacred Jumna and Ganges Rivers for the final immersion ceremony over the mythical Saraswathi, holiest spot of Hinduism. In the funeral procession are Pandit Nehru (center of first rank), Devadas Gandhi, son of Gandhi (bare headed with shawl over right shoulder, in front of man with army cap, left). Sardar Patel, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, and G.P. Pant round out the group.
